Sales Presentations

Technorati tags:

If you are a regular reader of my blog, you know that I am constantly trying to improve presentations. We do about 1 presentation a week for customers, partners and staff. Power Point is turning 20 and I think that is is time for us to get back to the basics of presentations. If you want someone to blame, find this guy.

Bob Gaskins invented the application which has been the excuse for more wasted time that any other business technology since the invention of the water cooler.

Bottom line is all of this fancy capability is giving your 'presentees' something to actually think about. "Doesn't he realize this presentation is a waste of time? Why doesn't he just tell us what matters and get it over with?" That is what is in their minds.

From Seth Godin - Read his entire blog:

  • No more than six words on a slide. EVER. There is no presentation so complex that this rule needs to be broken.
  • No cheesy images. Use professional stock photo images.
  • No dissolves, spins or other transitions.
  • Sound effects can be used a few times per presentation, but never use the sound effects that are built in to the program. Instead, rip sounds and music from CDs and leverage the Proustian effect this can have. If people start bouncing up and down to the Grateful Dead, you’ve kept them from falling asleep, and you’ve reminded them that this isn’t a typical meeting you’re running.
  • Don’t hand out print-outs of your slides. They don’t work without you there.

Additionally, here are some ideas of another great presentation:
