Local Boy Does Good - 26 GFlops for $2,500
Double the speed of Deep Blue, remember that computer IBM built that beat Gary Kasparov at chess? Local computer science professor at Calvin College, Joel Adams, makes a 26.25 Gflop computer for about $2,500.
Design goals, according to Adams:
Tim Brom, senior student, and I received a small in-house grant of $2500 to try to build the system. The goals of the project were to build a cluster:
- Costing $2500 or less
- Small enough to fit on my desk, or fit in a checked-luggage suitcase
- Light enough to carry to my car (by hand)
- Powerful enough to provide at least 20 GFLOPs of measured performance:
- for personal research
- for the High Performance Computing course I teach
- for demonstrations at professional conferences, local high schools, and so on
- Powered via one line plugged into a standard 120V wall outlet
- Running at room temperature
Mission accomplished.
